Cortina d’Ampezzo
We had a nice dinner last night in a local restaurant. Not much is open here yet as summer doesnt officially begin until late June. We got up and had breakfast (they put on quite a spread here). Then we headed out to Tre Cime di Lavaredo It's about a 40 minute drive into the mountains We parked and headed to the starting point. It starts at a Refugio (there are 4 refugios on the hike which typically have bathrooms and food but today all are still closed as there is too much snow). At the second refugio we put on our crampons so we wouldnt slip in the ice and snow (we still slipped, but less) At the third we ate the lunch we brought (baguette, salami and cheese) and rested a bit This was about 3.5 miles in. Then we headed on the second half of the journey which was downhill and then uphill-mostly in the snow. I only fell twice(haha) and thankfully on snow so didn't hurt myself. We saw some marmots and an ermine and a lot of birds There were two military helicopters circling so we wondered if someone got hurt. There was a section that made me a bit crazy as the path was snowy and about 8inches wide with a steep drop off on the right side I just kept telling myself to put one foot in front of the other and only looked where my next step should be. I dont like heights and it gave me a bit of vertigo but i got thru it. After 7.88 miles with 1500 feet from lowest point to highest we completed the hike I felt very accomplished!! We returned to Cortina and walked into the town to get Missy a magnet and then have some pizza for dinner. Tomorrow we are off to Treviso!
